Today I want to talk about women in leadership roles. We see such a need for new ways of thinking, managing, speaking in business and much of the promise can be found in women and their unique perspectives.
Women care for the children and if time permits have a flourishing career. And men are more traditionally in the leadership role however, with the workforce needs changing so dramatically, opportunities are improving for women.
What can women do to elevate themselves to places of authentic leadership? How can women be seen as equals and respected as such? Perhaps the most important consideration is in what women believe about themselves.
Diane Von Fursten (designer) once said, “My mother told me that women are stronger than men, so I believed her! ” Believing in ourselves as women is crucial to success in leadership.
Gender shouldn’t determine if a person can or cannot be a great leader. Unfortunately, even in the modern-day workplace, gender diversity remains a contentious topic. Women aren’t encouraged to take on leadership roles as much as their male counterparts. This is extremely sad because in some cases women are more deserving than their male colleagues but aren’t allowed to aim for the stars because of family or work pressure.
Women are just as qualified as men to lead, yet there exists this chasm that grants men the privilege of being viewed in a better light as compared to women. Without the backing of an iron throne, here’s how women can be great leaders and prove their mettle.
Don’t back down when you see a challenge
Weathering challenges not only makes you stronger but also reveals what you are made of. What’s more, overcoming a challenge can give you immense satisfaction and renew your confidence in your skills and abilities. If you want to reach the top, you need to start by acknowledging that your career will not always be smooth-sailing.
Adversity builds character and resilience. When you face hardship, don’t let your ego dictate your actions. Ask for help when needed, and be prepared for any challenge that comes your way. If you remain humble and agile through your hardship, you’ll rise above the rest with ease.
If you want to make it to the top, you need someone to guide you along the way. It’s never too late to seek mentorship. Women should make an earnest effort to learn from the leaders in their industry. The exchange of experience and knowledge between protégés and mentors benefits both parties and is, therefore, a win-win situation.
Even if you don’t have a formal mentor, try to have coffee with people from your industry who inspire you. When you seek out people you respect, you make valuable contacts, and this network of people will help you further your leadership goals when the time is right. Also, it’s always fun to pick the brains of successful people and understand how they got where they are today.
Believe in yourself
If your male colleague can give a fabulous presentation, so can you. Never doubt, even for a moment, that you cannot accomplish what your male counterparts are achieving. Working hard and recognizing your own talents will lead you down the road to success. When you are able to identify your own potential, you forge the correct path for yourself.
Take chances on yourself. If you believe that your current position or company is not right for you, do what you can to be where you want to be. Playing it safe won’t give you real success.
